Monique is a smart and independent little girl who makes good decisions, except maybe when it comes to cute animals. Her eagerness to help a mysterious bunny gets her transported to a strange world full of goblin inventors, dog armies, cosmic giants, and even stranger things! Armed with the ancestral weapon of rabbitkind (an old shovel) she must help her animal friends, and get home in time for supper. Along the way she will experience the bravery of folk heroes, the power of ancient gods and the danger of lurking monsters; all while making sure her animal friends are safe.
A word book for young readers, The Tale of Tallest Rabbit is a family friendly collection of stories tied together by an overarching narrative of bravery and friendship.

The Tale of Tallest Rabbit edition by Rodrigo Lopez Children eBooks

I got this book after hearing about it on a popular podcast as I hoped it might be something new and fun to read with my children. That hope was well placed. I truly loved how new and fresh the stories were while they still assumed a suspension of disbelief that is on par with traditional storytelling. There was no need to make up elements in an attempt to rationalize fantastical events. The overall narrative and the stories contained within are, in my opinion, enjoyable to both "grown-ups" and children alike.

One part I particularly enjoyed was the Inception level of storytelling within storytelling. At one point, I stopped to discuss with my children the fact that we were reading a story wherein a character was telling a story about a character that told yet another character a story. To be clear, there was no complication added for the reader. Rodrigo was able to introduce this level of beautiful storytelling so skillfully that these "levels" of story flowed quite naturally. I wanted to mention it, however, as I thought it was unique and done skillfully. Well done, Rodrigo.

I would also be remiss not to mention a story dealing with death and dying that was both poignant for a "grown up" and relatable to a child. This was another element that was handled realistically, respectfully, and skillfully. Nothing about it should be traumatic, to be clear, and it may encourage some conversation between parents and children - it did in our household.

Overall, I really appreciated this book and am glad that I heard about it. I plan on purchasing another copy for some friends. I'm also hopeful that we'll get to hear more stories about Monique, her friends, and their continuing fantastical adventures.

The Tale of Tallest Rabbit edition by Rodrigo Lopez Children eBooks Reviews

The Tale of Tallest Rabbit is a rare gem - a children's book that succeeds in communicating and reinforcing morality without being moralizing. A little girl wanders out of the immediate safety of adult supervision and into a hole full of talking animals, magic, and adventure. Starting with that familiar structure, Rodrigo Lopez takes his reader through a series of vignettes about a warren of rabbits searching for a new home.

Kids are sure to love the charmingly realized characters and tales of adventure that make for fertile ground for imagination games. The heroine's adventure is perilous but not too frightening for younger readers. Adventures are exciting without the use of wanton violence, and every encounter leads to another story and a chance to discover our common humanity (or... rabbitidy? lagomorphity? love of carrots?)
I really enjoy Rodrigo's story-telling gift in Critical Hit, and I also enjoyed reading his new book for the same reason; each of the multiple stories packed in this little gem were unique and fascinating, with the added bonus of each being written in the different voices of each storyteller to add extra flair. The over-arching story was very simple and easy to follow, making it a rather excellent book for kids. I'd definitely say that parents should get a kick out of reading this book out loud, as it seems to have been written precisely for that purpose and has a lot of rhythm in its prose.

For this book to hit all the right notes, however, you need to have some general knowledge of fairy tales and adventure stories to begin with so that the random moments Rodrigo subverts the genre produces that moment of hilarity it truly is. This is probably why this book reads well for adults as well as for kids.

I personally found the book hilarious in all the right places (Monique's story was amazing) and I really liked some of the short stories packed in there; Greenest had one of the best ones, in my opinion, though Richest's Giant Cat story was possibly the funniest one in there. It helps that all the characters were insanely adorable. (It continues to fascinate me how well Rodrigo was replicate a ten-year-old girl's head voice when he is... well, as far as I know, not a ten-year-old girl!)

While not the most complete read (it could have gone longer and I would've enjoyed it, really! and come on, the rabbit with the circlet on its head!) it is very close to one, and I really enjoyed it a lot. It's well-written, funny and remarkably sweet.

If Rodrigo chooses to write more in a more adult vein, I'll certainly jump right on board with that. But this is a read I recommend for kids and all ages!
The Tale of Tallest Rabbit by Rodrigo Lopez-

This charming tale of a brilliant little girl has joy inscribed on every page. From the adorable (if somewhat dense) rabbits to the devout followers of the Thunderbird, the realm that Monique finds herself in is steeped in deep, but incredibly digestible, lore. There are plenty of great lessons to be had from this book. In the fantasy world of TOTR, stories count as currency. It is the through the exchange of stories that the world becomes so very fleshed out in a remarkably short span of time. These stories not only tell a lot about the world, but also a lot about the storyteller. Lessons of cultural sensitivity, respect for religions that are not your own, lending aid wherever you can, and even noble sacrifice are explored. Being able to tackle one of those matters in a manner that is delightful and enrapturing to kids and adults alike would be impressive, but Rodrigo Lopez manages to weave in all of this, some of it obviously, much of it subtly. Monique is polite, intelligent, and an overall exemplary role model for children. For adults, I recommend this book as a charming retreat into youthful fantasies. For children, it teaches lessons that are becoming more important in the world, promoting kindness and generosity to all, despite their differences. And the best bit is, I am clearing missing some themes. There are so many little stories, little nuggets of lore, that there is a lot for a parent and child to discuss at bedtime. Also, if someone could find a way to make a plushy of Greenest Rabbit for me, that would be great.
