Ambition, manipulation, love, and divided loyalties. Seizing his opportunity in 2014, Alabama Senator Augustus Williams relentlessly pursues his dream of becoming the South’s first white Supreme Court Justice in decades, using every device at his disposal. His four-year quest reverberates across the tangled web of Washington and national politics, with unforeseeable and sometimes devastating consequences. It irreversibly alters both his own life and the course of history.

Appointments A Novel of Life in Our Nation Capital David Carmell Books

Appointments was an excellent book that kept me engaged throughout It starts out with small indiscretions that evolve into larger problems as the characters try to cover them up, until the whole thing starts to spin out of control. Like the plot, the book starts out slow and detailed, but speeds up as the plot moves on, which effectively creates the sense of the parties panicking to keep control of the situation.

The author has a wonderful way with words, a subtle sense of humor, an in depth knowledge of government, and a clever plot that combines a cynical view of Washington with a keen understanding of human nature. It creates a credible and intriguing story of DC politics going wrong.

The love scenes seemed a little stilted, but that’s not what the book is about. I highly recommend this book to anyone who gets a kick out of politics, or anyone who just wants a good thriller with interesting characters and with a lot of plot twists.

It was clearly written by a Washington insider.

Appointments A Novel of Life in Our Nation Capital David Carmell Books Reviews

Here is a review by Natasha Jackson for Readers' Favorite

If you thought the televised political appointments were intriguing, wait until you read David Carmell's take on what happens behind the scenes in "Appointments A Novel of Life in Our Nation's Capital". Chronicling one Senator's efforts to get a powerful political appointment and another's Presidential aspirations, this novel takes the readers on a hilarious yet sexy journey through the treacherous world of politics. This isn't the tale of the bumbling and bungling politicians we see on television making absurd claims; the characters created by Carmell know the true meaning of the word 'politicking'.

Adding to the authenticity of the novel, lest there be questions, Carmell struts his stuff using the subtle nuances of political-speak, or political non-speak as the case may be. Between the complicated entanglements, alliances and relationships, the conniving and the intrigue, "Appointments" reads more like a royal Victorian thriller than a modern political tale. Although this is pure fiction, if there was ever any doubt why very little can get done in Washington these days we can all look to Carmell's characters and their back-stabbing, petty vindictiveness and self-serving ways to understand exactly why.
I red this book very carefully. It is very easy to follow the plot and understand the complex relationships. Mr Carmell's use of the English language is very enjoyable and the book was great fun to read.
"Appointments" captures the intricacies of Washington politics with unerring accuracy. David Carmell is acutely attuned to political nuance, the language of the Capital and the interplay between Congress and the Executive Branch. Add to that a dose of Constitutional interpretation, and a mixture of sex and scandal, and the result is deliciously entertaining.
Development of characters took a while, but the last few chapters were page turners. Great look at how things really work in our government.
Once I started reading "Appointments", it was impossible to put it down. The author takes you into the intricate, real life workings of the confirmation process and how it can affect the lives of everyone involved. You get a real insight into the characters as they struggle to deal with the politics and personal issues that engulf them. This is a terrific read.
Appointments is what my book club calls a "great read" - an intriguing plot which keeps one turning the pages long after intending to be asleep, characters who reflect the complexity and diversity of real people thus maintaining the reader's curiosity concerning the conclusions to which these characters' life choices will lead, a storyline which informs and educates the reader. Additionally, the grammar, sentence structure and vocabulary add to the reading pleasure and will satisfy the fussiest English major!
APPOINTMENTS - A Novel of Life in Our Nation's Capital

As one who has been active at the local state and national levels of politics, I find the novel rings true.

The book shows how the full range of human activities enter into government proceedings, high-mindedness, personal feeling, pettiness, vindictiveness, stupidity, CYA, and scapegoating disrupt, distort and help our government function.

The author shows his mastery of both the beauty and precision of properly used English.

It is a good read.
