Professor Ralph Chalmers is on the sleuthing trail again in Thurbin’s third book in the series. This time he is teamed up with the indomitable Katie Eggerton, friend, and former inmate of Holloway Women’s prison. This is yet another cracking yarn of murder and intrigue involving international art dealers, petty criminals and the world of underworld fraudsters.
When an art valuer in London is found murdered shortly after assessing the University’s collection at Dorich House, it doesn’t take long for Ralph and his new sidekick to get in on the action.
On the home front, Inspector Linham and his faithful Sergeant Wilson play by the book and tow a fine line to solve the murder while at the same time accepting any help they can get from Chalmers.
Ralph and Katie become embroiled in the murky dealings that underpin the shadier side of the multi-billion dollar world of art when they travel to Paris and St Petersburg as part of Ralph’s fund raising efforts for the University. It doesn’t take the pair long to link the murder to a plot to intercept a valuable collection of paintings that are to be shipped from the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg to Houghton Hall in the English countryside.
Although Ralph is on sabbatical, he still has time to join his pals at the University bar where they are in usual good form, ready to offer advice and good humour along with the occasional pint.
The story culminates with the murderer being confronted by Ralph while attempting to flee the country. But as usual there is an ironic twist to the ending that will surprise and delight the reader.
The book is topical as in the Spring of 2013 the Hermitage shipped the Sir Robert Walpole collection from St. Petersburg to the Marquess of Cholmondeley’s Houghton Hall in Norfolk for a major exhibition. Hopefully the fiction presented in this book will remain so.

This could be a good story if it were better written. The author manages to talk down to his readers, by explaining that Henry VIII was a Tudor monarch, for one thing, and that a character's remark was meant to be a joke. Humour speaks for itself and does not need to be pointed out. And if in this day and age someone does not know who Henry VIII was they can look it up in seconds. All this from an author who does not know the difference between discrete and discreet, and managed to mangle both stash and cache by telling us about a stache of hidden jewels. Rhetoric awkward, characters forced because of author's compulsion to over-explain everything. I'm inclined not to read the remaining 75%, and will not buy any more books by this author. It's too bad, because the series is quite extensive and it can be hours of entertainment to follow a protagonist through one adventure after another when the stories are intelligently written. Note to every aspiring author: have your work edited by someone at least as intelligent as yourself, and do not depend on Spellcheck.

Loved this whole series!
Still enjoying series
I have only read the first book of his series - not this one yet - so I'm hoping his style improves and there's not so much mental ruminating about past events/loves. Character building is pretty good but can do without all the personal angst for each playerand tighten up the actual plot.
These mysteries, though well written, can be tough to get through. The amount of (usually unnecessary) detail borders on the tedious and I found the three mysteries I have read in the series to be pedantic at best.
Entertaining story line.
I have to say I enjoyed this book quite a bit. Not my favourite style of writing, but that's a personal thing. The story was good, but there were gaps of days that weren't accounted for which I found disconcerting. Prof Chalmers is a bit of a drongo, I guess head in the clouds would be a better term. I found that annoying in someone supposedly middle aged. He should be a bit more of a go-getter, skirt chaser, that sort of thing. The ending left me completely flat. Hated it. That's my opinion, it may be the way some people like their endings, but not me.
I love this writer. She provides a picturesque scene of London and the countryside. I feel like I'm traveling with the characters. Not a "whodunit", but suspenseful and endearing characters. Uses some terminology I'm not familiar with so I'm frequently going to google to read more. Isn't that what learning is all about? Discovered much that I now want to visit first-hand. I'm on her 13th book now and it's bittersweet. I don't want them to be over.....
