The Tapestry of Death.

More medeival mystery for people who laugh.

England 1067 Briston the weaver has been murdered – in a very special way – and it is up to his old friend Wat to avenge his death.
Brother Hermitage will naturally support his companion in the quest, but the young monk worries as the number of suspects keeps rising. He's never been good with crowds.

When events take a turn for the truly bizarre, Hermitage and Wat find themselves up to their Saxon socks in people who want them dead, people who want one another dead and people who seem to want everyone dead.

They must find a missing maiden, placate a giant killer and reveal the awful secret of the Tapestry of Death before matters are resolved. Resolved largely unsatisfactorily, but then that's life.

With a monk, tradesmen, priests, Normans and Saxons, The Tapestry of Death should be a solid, traditional medieval who-done-it, but it isn't. Really, it isn't.

Authentic and accurate representation of the time? Barely.
Historically informative? Certainly not.
Hilarious and very silly? Now you're getting warm.

Critical analysis of the work of Howard of Warwick

“His writing is crisp, riotously funny, and he weaves a masterful little mystery that will leave you crying for more!”

“Like Brother Cadfael visits Discworld.”

“I would recommend this to anyone who loves a good story! It is so hard to wait until the new books come out!”

Compared to Monty Python, Carry On films, Terry Pratchett ...and Winnie the Pooh!

If you're looking for a serious historical mystery with all the usual trappings, look elsewhere.
If you're hoping for characters who are knowledgable beyond their time and talk like a history book, prepare to be disappointed.
If you're after a tale of a monk hopelessly out of his depth and a weaver who is really rather naughty, this is the book for you.

Now available in a massive box set with The Heretics of Death and The Garderobe of Death; for those with a lever-arch

As the story opens Brother Hermitage and his friend, Wat the weaver, are with the body of a weaver named Briston who has been killed by being wrapped in a Tapestry of Death. Wat is honor bound to find the killer. He suspects the wavers' guild is behind the killing because (1) Briston has been creating pornographic tapestries and/or (2) he has employed a girl as an apprentice. As a King's Investigator, Brother Hermitage is enjoined to help in the search of the killer or killers.

I enjoyed the first two novels in this series. The humor and situations were well done and added to the plot. In this novel there is too much humor for the sake of humor and very little intelligent plot flow. A few descriptive words would work better rather than to confuse the reader by trying for constant humor. For example, Hemitage and Wit are seeking a butcher. They come to a valley and this is the sight that greets them:

"The best description that came into Hermitage's head was that this was the site of a battle. Probably an Old Testament battle. Great forces had been unleashed and thine enemies had been well and truly scattered.
The butcher's enemies were scattered everywhere. Hermitage wondered for a moment why this man had become a butcher as it looked like he wasn't very good at it. On the other hand it may have been his only choice."

It takes further reading before the reader realizes what the two men actually see. Why not just say, "The carcases of dead pigs littered the valley."

In previous books in this series Brother hermitage's systematic and analytical approach overcome the idiocy that he faces. In this novel Brother Hermitage just seems to go along with a flow that ultimately leads to a resolution of the problems which he encounters as a result of idiocy and brutality. There are some very humorous lines and situations in this novel but there is also too much in the way of endless convoluted arguments that just leave the reader frustrated with a desire to see the story move along. The murder mystery ends about one quarter of the way into the book. Then it is just a collection of everyone wanting to kill, maim or torture everyone else and how Wit and Brother Hermitage go about trying to avoid that. It became a bit of a chore to read after awhile.

The Tapestry of Death The Chronicles of Brother Hermitage Book 3 edition by Howard of Warwick Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews

This is the 3rd book in the series that I have read. The Tapestry of Death had its moments but the ending killed it for me. However I will try the next book in the series just to see how far fetched the series will go.
This starts out as a pretty boring 'find-the-culprit' mystery/comedy, but begins to take twists and turns all over the place. There's plenty of ranking on Normans and Nobility plus an extra dose of the hilarious bizarreness that characterizes Howard of Warwick work. His work has definitely reached an excellent level in this and the Garderobe of Death.
Howard of Warwick's writing has definitely improved as his Brother Hermitage series has progressed. The murder mystery that begins this story ends up going in a completely unexpected direction, then there is another death that seems to defy all logical explanation. Why is the church so interested in the case? Did the Weaver's Guild order an execution? Will Hermitage's immortal soul be placed in jeopardy by a pornographic tapestry? Plenty of medieval misdirection and humor doesn't prevent Hermitage from plucking the truth from the Tapestry of Death.
Really cannot say too much more other than I purchased this series of books for my husband (who never picks out his own books!) and he absolutely LOVED the series..........He said these were probably his favorite books now and he is anxiously awaiting the opportunity to read more about the antics of Brother Hermitage and Wat the weaver. What parts I have read are laugh-out-loud funny. If you are looking for historical fiction with a good dose of humor, these are your books.......If you are looking for nail-biting, edge- of- your- seat murder mystery/thrillers, probably not the series for you. Oh, go on..........buy the books and have fun!
This is fun reading while your wait for a haircut or a delayed flight. How does the author come up with this stuff unless he talks to a lot of folk that I know.
Here we are in 1066 or so traveling with a woman apprentice, 'there is no such thing!', a weaver of indecent tapestries, and a monk so innocent and socially unaware he must be an early autistic. Throw in three religious Castigators, a giant blob of evil with his minions, a butcher aka delineator of hot loins, a wicked witches coven of weavers and...well...the results must surely be extraordinary. As they are. Good fun all around, except for those in the wrong place at the definitely wrong time. Actually violence while glaringly indicated with unwavering constancy is seldom actually apparent. Enjoy!
Initially, Brother Hermitage was the proverbial fish out of water. In his opening saga he was well meaning and thoughtful andthatwas it. Itb was Wat he started his coming out of his shell. In this third instalment, Brother Armitage is much more the thoughtful solver of crimes. Often surprising himself and Wat, Hermitage led the way in the investigations. Though not yet a Brother Cadfael or Brother Athelstan, he is getting there. He is sorting out what is appropriate and what isn't, often surprising Wat with his self reliance. The killer did come from left field but paying attention to the narrative, you could follow Hermitage's thoughts on his investigation.. Well spiced with humour but the story and character development are what brings you in.
