The play “Frankie and Johnny Were Schweethawts”,
by Thomas M. Kelly, © 2001
This play takes place in any river town with hazy harlot haunts, honkytonks, hook-shops and hotels.
The set is the interior of a local speakeasy... next to a hotel door... next to a pawn shop door... next to a hanging gallows.
The time is 1923.
CAST OF ‘CHARACTERS’
The Bartender, street wise, friend to all until you cross him, typical 1920's costume
The Sheriff, greasy, capable of anything legal or not, typical sheriff's costume
The Pianoplayer, white shirt, straw hat, red vested showman,
The Prizefighter, tights, wife beater t-shirttypical drunk, seeking bar fights
The Madam, (Ma), Johnny's mother, runs a brothel next door to speakeasy
Nelly Bly, a drunken chippy, one of 'Ma's girls', fancy showgirl dress
Lila, a drunken chippy, one of 'Ma's girls', fancy showgirl dress
Frankie, one of 'Ma's'girls', fancy showgirl dress, sucker for 'Johnny' types
Johnny, fancy dressed pimp, not to be trusted.
A hanging. How did we get to the hanging of a beautiful girl? The year is 1927. There are the prostitutes the Frankies’, the ‘Nellies’, and the ‘Lilas’ who roam the back alleys.
There are the hotel owners the ‘Madams’. There are the pimps the ‘Johnnys’. There is the ‘Sheriff’ who looks the other way while bootleg hootch is served by the ‘Bartenders’ in coffee mugs to the ‘Prizefighters’, the local bigwigs, the drummers, and, of course, the politicians.
This is not a typical speakeasy; this is Johnny’s Place The fanciest
Speakeasy west of the Sierra. It’s a Friday night and Johnny’s friends, harlots and hussies gather to amuse themselves and wait for Johnny’s ‘johns’ to arrive.
